The Grove Dictionary of Art is, well, as they say on their site, "The most comprehensive online reference resource for all aspects of the visual arts from prehistory to the present day." That's a pretty sweeping statement, to say the least, but they cite the Library Journal as proclaiming their site as "One of the 50 Best Reference Sources of the Millennium." Judge for yourself! Or, maybe, not! The Grove Dictionary of Art wants you to subscribe and only has a free 24-hour trial period. Not for the casual art surfer!

My! Oh! My! How could I have forgotten about Bartleby.com? Bartleby is a major "great books online" site. For example, look at Craig, W.J., ed. 1914. The Oxford Shakespeare, William Shakespeare, and Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. Here they are, available on the Net for free. Don't forget about this site again!
